Budgeting for wedding cake can be tricky wedding cakes can cost between $500 and $1800 depending on what you want and who you hire. To cut down on costs I recommend purchasing a 9 inch round cake from Publix for the cake cutting and a sheet cake for cutting and serving in the kitchen after the cake cutting. You can also purchase 4 to 6 dozen donuts from Krispy Kreme and trust me everyone will be happy.
Wedding Cake Tips:
If you decide on a traditional tiered wedding cake a 3 to 4 tier wedding cake looks best and it is nice to do different flavors for each tier. You can do a 4 tier wedding cake and save the top tier or do a 3 tier cake and save the top tier or purchase a separate anniversary tier.
Never order your full guest count in wedding cake. Example: Guest Count is 150 get a wedding cake that serves 120.
Sugar Flowers cost a lot of money and drive up the cost of a wedding cake. Add fresh flowers from your florist if you want flowers on your wedding cake.
Fondant costs more money than butter cream icing.
Detailing with icing costs more money, keep the design and icing detailing simple.
Make sure that you let your baker know if you are doing a cake topper.
Never transport your own cake, anything that is tiered (even 2 tiers). Always pay the delivery charge, trust me it is worth the money.
Always request a box for leftover cake from your baker and bring an extra box just in case on wedding day. The person delivering the cake might forget to bring a box. You can purchase boxes at Walmart and Party City.
If you are doing a grooms cake make sure that it is small and feeds less than half of your guest count or you will have lots of leftover cake.
Your caterer will charge a cake cutting fee for providing plates, forks and napkins and for cutting the cake. You can save money if you provide disposable plates, forks and napkins and I will gladly cut your cake for your guests.
